This year, New South Wales will enforce a double demerits period over the Anzac Day Weekend. In this period, penalties for traffic charges will be more severe. This will run from Friday the 21st of April until Tuesday the 25th of April, inclusive. During this time, double demerits apply for the following types of offences:
- Speeding
- Illegal use of mobile phones
- Not wearing a seatbelt
- Riding a motorcycle without a helmet
Fines will also be given out for these offences, and NSW Police will have extra officers patrolling the roads during the holiday period. In addition to dedicated Highway Patrol Officers, regular Police can also hand out traffic fines for many infringements. You can lose demerit points from infringements caught by officers, permanent cameras and temporary traffic cameras.
Demerit points can quickly add up and restrict your ability to drive – and a double demerit period can see your entire licence wiped out in a single drive. The penalties for some common offences during double demerit periods are:
- Drive (not Learner or P-plate) using mobile phone when not permitted = $362 fine and 10 demerit points
- Driver not wearing seatbelt = $362 fine and 6 demerit points
- Exceed speed limit over 20 km/h in a Class C Motor Vehicle = $632 fine and 8 demerit points
