This year, NSW will be running a double demerit period from the 24th of December until the 3rd of January, capturing a large part of the summer holiday break. The double demerit point scheme applies for the following types of offences:
- Speeding
- Illegal use of mobile phones
- Not wearing a seatbelt
- Riding without a helmet
Fines will also be given out for these offences, and NSW Police will have extra officers patrolling the roads during the holiday period. In addition to dedicated Highway Patrol Officers, regular Police can also hand out traffic fines for many infringements. You can lose demerit points from officers, permanent cameras and temporary traffic cameras.
Demerit points can quickly add up and restrict your ability to drive – and a double demerit point period can see your entire licence wiped out in a single drive. The penalties during double demerits for some common offences are:
- Drive using mobile phone when not permitted – 10 Demerit points and $349 fine
- Driver not wearing seatbelt – 6 Demerit points and $349 fine
- Exceed speed over 30 km/h (Vehicle under 4.5 tonnes) – 10 Demerit points and $935 fine
Brady and Associates have years of experience in defending against criminal and traffic offences. We can help you argue against your charges or downgrade your penalty so that you can get your licence back as soon as possible and get back to work. We have a great success record for achieving Section 10’s (where no conviction is recorded for the offence), as well as turning over licence suspensions and disqualifications.
The Brady and Associates office will close on the 24th of December and reopen on the 10th of January. If you get in any trouble while driving over the Summer holidays, contact Brady and Associates to ensure that you receive our valuable legal representation.
